Renaissance women’s gathering
Koura Branch
The Renaissance women’s gathering, founded about thirty years ago, is an association of active and accountable women from all regions of Lebanon. These member women joined forces and work together for the advancement the eminence of women in the Lebanese society. This is realized by promoting the role of women as a productive component of the labor force, including housewives who have to stay at home.
The Koura-Branch is one a number of Branches that constitute the Gathering. Separately and jointly with other Branches, it has been working hard to accomplish the objective of supporting women in becoming industrious and productive members of the society. This Branch, based in Amioun, has a membership of about fifty women from almost all towns and villages of Koura.
A very important achievement that was materialized by the Koura Branch was the starting of an “Artizanat” center in Amioun. This was preceded by some local investigation studies that showed the need of housewives in Koura for an outlet to market their homemade handcrafts. This Center has become a well reputable and dependable outlet store that sells various handwork and handcraft articles and traditional homemade foods and provisions that are prepared by housewives and women. Also it is serving some gifted women to display and sell their paintings, drawings and other fine art products.
In addition, the Center organizes some training sessions for women on how to do some handwork; like sewing, needlework, and drawing on textiles and glass. In another service, women are guided in food preservation matters and the preparation of provisions to be kept for winter consumption. The Koura Branch organizes, early each autumn, an annual exhibition to display and sell these homemade food products.
Women welfare is further supported by organizing and holding lectures and seminars to educate women about public health, motherhood, childcare, and other essential aspects of life.
At the beginning of each scholastic year, the Branch distributes textbooks to needy students who are attending Public Schools. This is a significant help to many families in keeping their children in school.
Some of the projects that are envisaged for the future are:
1. Starting of a sort of vocational school to teach women certain occupations. Like a “sewing Atelier”.
2. Starting of summer training sessions or workshops to educate women about modern processes of food conservation, as by canning or dehydration or sun drying.
3. Opening of a Nursery and a daycare preschool center for infants and children, in order to allow working mothers to resume their jobs.
4. Increase our contribution to needy students in order to encourage their enrolment in schools.
